It is always a challenge to properly seed a wrestling tournament, and it is never done to everybody's satisfaction. Over the years we have developed seeding criteria that are still subject to the intelligence and integrity of the parents, wrestlers, and tournament officials. In a single sentence, that explains how things get screwed up, and we screw up like everybody else, though we try real hard not to. If EVERYONE fills out our forms COMPLETELY and THEN attaches additional information, it is a LOT EASIER to seed the Qualifier tournaments properly and correct mistakes PRIOR to the start of the tournaments. RATHER THAN ATTACHING OTHER MATERIALS, FILL OUT THE SJWA FORMS COMPLETELY!!

• How We Seed the Qualifiers

First Consideration is given to SJWA Finals place winners from previous year, ranked as listed below. Within each consideration 1-5, the following ranking criteria should be applied: 

• 1^st Criteria - Same Division, Same Weight as last year

Highest placement from previous year is highest seed, if other place winners, seed accordingly. 

• 2^nd Criteria – Same Division, Different Weight than last year

Highest placement from previous year is highest seed, if other place winners, seed accordingly. If placement rank is same, go to considerations listed below (2 – 5). 

• 3^rd Criteria – Different Division, Same Weight as last year

Highest placement from previous year is highest seed, if other place winners, seed accordingly. If placement rank is same, go to considerations listed below (2 – 5).

• 4^th Criteria – Different Division, Different Weight than last year

Highest placement from previous year is highest seed, if other place winners, seed accordingly. If placement rank is same, go to considerations listed below (2 – 5).

Second Consideration is given to tournament place winners at USAW NJ State Championship place winners from previous year, ranked as listed above.

Third consideration is given to MAWA Eastern Nationals place winners, ranked as listed above.

Fourth consideration is given to MAWA Regional place winners, ranked as listed above.

Fifth consideration is given to other tournament placements and overall record. Tournament placements should be weighed heavier than league records.

Within reason, team mates (determined from what is written on entry forms) should be separated at the qualifier.

How We Seed the Finals

The setup of the finals is simple in concept, but is sometimes difficult in execution. Generally speaking, the wrestlers are distributed like this:

• 1st Place winner from Qualifier A wrestles 4th Place Winner from Qualifier B

• 3rd Place winner from Qualifier A wrestles 2nd Place Winner from Qualifier B

• 2nd Place winner from Qualifier A wrestles 3rd Place Winner from Qualifier B

• 4th Place winner from Qualifier A wrestles 1st Place Winner from Qualifier B

In the case that qualifiers do not show up to wrestle in the finals, the best judgment of SJWA officials is used to pair up wrestlers as fairly as possible. This is never done to the satisfaction of parents and coaches, but we do our best.
